Meningococcal infection is an infectious disease, which is mainly transmitted by direct contact through respiratory secretions from infected persons. The symptoms at earlier stages are not obvious. However, severe illness such as meningococcaemia and meningococcal meningitis may result when the bacteria invade the bloodstream or spinal cord and the membranes that envelope the brain. The diseases can lead to onset of fever, shock and even death in severe cases. Young children aged above 2 only need to have one shot, while infants in 9-23 months require two shots (given 3 months apart), protection rate from getting infected is as high as 85%. After injection, mild discomfort reactions such as pain at injection site may occur, but are usually mild and self-limited.
